It’s pretty obvious that everything that happened was the 1 and 14 million thing that needed to happen as Strange said would be the only way they would win.

His line right before death to Stark about this is the way it has to be; I believe proves that

My one problem with that is it seems like they win if they get the gauntlet. Then they high tail it to Thor.

So.

Why wasn’t part of the plan Strange telling Nebula (or someone) her sole job being to keep Quill from Thanos. Just walk away.

I thought of so many of those what-if scenarios, but always kept going back to Strange's explanation about the 1 in 14 million. I decided we just have to take what he says at face value: no matter what decision any character could have made differently, it would have still lead to the same end result, even if the path getting there was different, i.e. Thanos getting the stones and hittin' that snap.

And what's crazy is that there was obviously no sequence of events that did not end with Thanos wrecking shop, because the one sequence that Strange decided could work still involved Thanos getting his way along with the snap. This one opportunity just so happened to align in a way that would leave Tony alive, the right circumstances working in their favor(even while Thanos is omni-everything at the moment), and the right post-snap superheroes.

I kind of look at it like this: Tony has/will have the vision/plan, the right circumstances are the tools for this vision/plan, and the characters are the ones that will make this vision a reality. With Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, and Ant-Man basically being no-show this round, they and Tony are gonna be the means to that 1 in 14 million.

NOTE: Though, I do wonder in Strange's observation of all scenarios, surely he couldn't know for sure the little things that would have to occur after Thanos got his stones and Tony was left alive, but that this was the one sure way that would have the means to stop Thanos? I wasn't sure on this as far as his abilities when doing his multi-timeline observations.
