This is prevalent among many many urban school districts across the country. Its a culture problem, not a teacher, funding or curriculum problem. Until there is a change in culture in these communities regarding education, the more this will continue. Sad for America

This is dead on balls accurate!

I used to teach at an all black school and they bent the rules and did things to benefit them every way they could. One thing they did, was to have 8 classes in a day that only lasted 45 minutes because their "kids" could not sit in a desk very long or stay focused. It was hell! By the time I got the students in their desk and started their bell ringer, 15 minutes had already passed. I literally had usually less than 30 minutes for a lesson each day. The principal told us from day one, to never expect anything higher than a 2 on our SLT's which meant that ever teacher will be labeled a failure according to the state. Why did they do this? Because, they knew that their test scores would be horrible no matter what the teachers did but they wanted the blame to go on the teachers and nothing else. They constantly asked us to change grades for football stars etc, it was a complete joke! I thank God every day I got out of that hell hole!

BTW, this school is in North Tangipahoa parish and has produced many athletes to div 1 programs such as Alabama.

This is true, but that doesn't mean completely changing the way things are supposed to be taught didn't have an affect.

There are semi-private schools in harsh Urban areas in Los Angeles that make the kids wear uniforms and the parents have to pay a small percentage of tuition and the kids do really well because everyone is invested.

The full public schools are for shite. California just doesn't give a shite and doesn't have the money and the schools are full of people who can't read or write English.

They should just make it like the old days...if you don't want to learn, you just have to hit 5th grade and be a laborer your entire life. That's how it was for our great-grandparents.

Hell it was until after the 1950's that anything past 8th grade was required.

Forcing 17 year olds to go to school to sell drugs and waste everyone's time is not worth a teacher's effort.

You have to be committed...not just showing up because the State says you have to show up.
