Hoops news: Cal guard considering LSU for transfer

Will Wade is going hard after transfer guards. Kind of expected a big, but that could come as well.
The DePaul guard and now this kid from Cal.
Looks like he was suspended a few times and was their leading scorer (or close).

California transfer Don Coleman tells ESPN he’s down to Georgia Tech, LSU, Georgia Southern, South Alabama, Nevada and Missouri State.
14.2 PPG as a junior, sit one play one.

Kid had a 36% true shooting rate. That’s not very good. In all fairness though, what Cal put on the court this year was honestly an affront to the very game of basketball. These dudes made the 2010 Trent Boys team look like the 96 Bulls. Every time they played, Dr. James Naismith was doing fricking somersaults in his grave. It was disgraceful. So I doubt any player could thrive in that environment. Still would rather have the DePaul guard.

Yea I'm not sure LSU needs a "volume shooter" type like this. Not my first choice of transfer prospect.

He'll be good to practice against next year at least

He doesn’t seem like SEC caliber. Maybe defensively, but scoring 14 ppl when you take all the shots isn’t that great. Hell, Charlie Moore is 5’9 and scored 20 a game for them the season before. ‘19 class is loaded with guards, I want a transfer big

They'll go JUCO to get a big, I'd guess.
Good write up on Coleman here. Sounds like a tough kid, good defender, lots of grit, which Wade emphasized needing. Gets to the line a bunch, too, which is a skill we didn't have at all last year.
His junior college numbers were much more efficient, so it might just be a fit or coaching thing.

Like what i read about his defense.
He was on an awful team so I’d think he’d be more efficient playing alongside some of our guys.

do y'all think we'll take both cyrus and coleman?

I don’t think Wade would do that. Wouldn’t make much sense to take two guard transfers that both have to sit, especially when you’ll be losing Bigby-Williams, Reid, and possibly E. Williams after next season.
Signs seem to be pointing to getting a guard transfer that likely has to sit for a year; and then get a juco or grad transfer front court type guy that can play immediately since we could use a little more depth there for the 18-19 season.

If he plays well defensively then that is probably what Wade is looking at. After this past season I am betting be never wants that problem again.

Heard a faint rumor yesterday that Wyatt Walker from Samford might be the big Wade is looking at.
Walker's 6-9 and 240, and he missed all but two games last year due to injury (he averaged 9 and 5 in those two games). As a sophomore he averaged 12.9 and 9.7, shooting .586 from the floor, and as a freshman he averaged 10.6 and 6.0.
He's a grad transfer with TWO years left and can play immediately.
Here's his highlight video. He's not a star, but he's got size, he's a pretty good passer, he has a little bit of quickness about him and he seems to have some skill. If nothing else he could be a role player who could hold down some minutes inside.

LSU should be ok next year in the frontcourt. Obviously, KGB and Reid will play big minutes along with Days and Williams. Rachal also showed he could defend and rebound inside if need be.
With next year's roster already set (mostly), it is unlikely LSU would be able to pull in a frontcourt grad transfer looking to play big minutes next season. This guy looks like a more athletic version of the freshman C/F for Loyola-Chi. He can pass and seems to have some decent offensive skill around the rim. He also looks to be a much better defender. He may not be a guy you want to run out there for 30 minutes a game, but 8-10 minutes in a sub role is all you need.

I dont think we really need another BIG. Most teams roll with two PF's anyway and we undoubtedly have that
Posted on 4/7/18 at 3:23 am to HSHoopscoach
We need one more big next year (18-19) plus 2 more for the following year (19-20)
This guy from Samford can pass the ball and works to get open. He does have good skill around the rim, uses screens wells and works to get open. He also hit a couple of 3's. I think he is good for 2 subs (3-4 min each) per half so 15 min per game. A good replacement when a big fouls out, or some scrappy min to get opponent's big some fouls.

We absolutely need another big. Not necessarily for next year, but when Reid and Bigby Williams leave, our tallest players will be 6-7.

Now there's another name - Courtese Cooper, who's a 6-9, 205 pound JUCO freshman with 3 years to play.
He was the 5 for Triton College in Illinois which won the national championship in JUCO Division 2. Averaged 10 and 7, with 2.9 blocks per game.
He would fit what we want, though he's a kid who needs the weight program big-time. The fact he has three years left is important. He wouldn't play a lot this year but with 20 pounds he might be a contributor when Bigby-Williams and Reid are gone in a year.
Oh, BTW - LSU isn't recruiting the Cyrus kid. He's out.
