My grandfather passed in 2006. Flew B24 in Italy, got emotional when I asked questions. Only story he shared was that local kids would come up begging for candy from airmen. They gave the kids a shoebox of shot from their flight. He laughed like a psychopath after telling that.

My grandmother worked in the Ypsilanti, Michigan (Willow Run) plant that built B-24s during the war. I remember her saying they would roll off the line, fly over Lake Michigan, making a couple of turns...then fly off towards England.
