At 37 years of age, I think I finally found something that I can connect with spiritually.

It's a good feeling, gotta say.

Being a Deist, I could never find any Bible or Scripture that made me feel good inside.

Buddhism is filling that void.

As the Dalai Lama says: Do not study Buddhism to become a better Buddhist. Study Buddhism to become a better whatever you are.

Buddhism does not seem to conflict with any other religion that I can see.

So there is nothing about Buddhism that you find hard to accept?

Not so far.

There's almost no mysticism in the teachings.

I mean, none I've come across.

It teaches you how to focus your body and mind to be in harmony with each other and therefore allowing you to be in harmony with everything.

What does “rebirth” mean to you?

You want to know if I believe in reincarnation?

It could be interpreted that way.

To me though, rebirth means you've been reborn as a person. You've managed to control or overcome your suffering and are now reborn.

Like an addict who gets clean and stays clean, because he's learn to control his suffering and found harmony.

And yet you quote the Dalai Lama, whose brand of Buddhism has serious mystical elements.

Why not try something like Stoicism or Neoplatonism from the western tradition first?

Well, Buddhism denies the existence of God as creator and the soul, which conflicts w/ pretty much every major religion out there

Meditation doesn’t have to be a Buddhist thing, I am catholic and I do meditation, usually while listening to chant.

I just got back from 3 weeks in SE Asia and I must say Buddhism and Hinduism seem like really interesting "religions" to follow.

Also as another poster here said, I find alot of resonation with Stoicism too. I think many people around here could learn a thing or two studying Stoicism.

I'm really connecting with what they refer to as "Secular Buddhism".

I’m in . I’m active at the temple and my practice is rudimentary. I was basically in before I was in- mostly on a meditative level ( like a discipline) and philosophical level.

Lots of Christians , agnostics etc come to meditation. It doesn’t conflict with people of other faiths and it doesn’t care if you are. I’m a super low anxiety person but I recommend it highly for those struggling with anxiety. I’m talking about simple Buddhist meditation and reflection, not a deep dive into the religion.
