How is this accomplished? Do you rent a machine or can you hire people?

Try the greenworks electric machine. It’s cheap on amazon.

If you use a push mower you can buy a de-thatching blade

I rent a machine, my yard and my parent's yard and split the rental fee. Use my yard vac to pick up the thatch.
