This may be the only time I support Walmart

quote:

An industry association representing Texas' liquor store operators says it will appeal a federal judge's ruling that opens the door for Walmart in Texas to sell liquor by the bottle.

U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman's ruling Tuesday backed Walmart's constitutional challenge to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, which had refused Walmart licenses for retail liquor sales. The retailer argued package liquor license restrictions, some dating to the end of Prohibition, amounted to unconstitutional discrimination.

Though I think it’s dumb I would guess that a lot of the country has laws not allowing regular stores to sell liquor.

Being that my local HEB’s beer selection is 10 times better than my local Spec’s, it would be awesome if I could pick up liquor there as well.

We love our free market down here in Texas, folks.

We really do.

Really.

Kind of interesting that the reddist states seem to have the most un-free markets laws when it comes to alcohol.

I blame the Tony Perkins-type Republicans.

Georgia has a law (I think) that limits chains to only allow 2 stores in the state to sell spirits. Take Total Wine for example. Only two Total Wine stores in the state can sell liquor. The other locations are relegated to beer and wine.

And grocery stores/wal marts still can't sell it at all for whatever reason.

Bible belt republicans. Free market doesn't apply when you think it's a sin.

Change is coming though. Towns in rural east Texas are going wet by the day it seems.

I still have to leave the county to buy liquor. Fortunately I live near the county line and cross it often for work.

Something similar here in SC, but I think it's being challenged or has been overturned.

Total Wine has been chomping at the bit to open more stores here.

I see your dumb TX law and raise you an Oklahoma. Liquor stores can only sell liquor (no coolers, ice, cups, ping pong balls, etc) and there is no refrigerated section. No wonder meth is so popular

Partially true. All the cold beer you can buy is only 3.2% ABV. You can get the higher percentage but it is all room temperature and only in liquor stores. You can imagine my frustration when trying to stock up for the weekend only to be told that I couldn't buy miller lite due to it being delivered cold

Like I said, real beer isn't in grocery stores.

If we're keeping score, this makes it:

TX: A lot.
LA: 1
OK: 0

it really is a pain to make 2 stops, and heb will rival anyones price if they are allowed to sell liquor. even if slightly separate like costco

Central Market (HEB) in FW beats Specs right down the street on beer selection.

Always had a really good wine selection, but they just stepped it up big time. Some really hard to find hammers that I've never seen in a retail setting.

Good people there, too.

Is HEBs that good or is specs that bad? I know the specs that I go to one of the biggest stores they have so it could be that. They have like an 60+ foot section of Texas beers, 60+ foot section of all other beers, 40 foot set of bombers, and then probably 80-100 foot cold box set. Oh and a 12 or so foot set of mix and match.

It’s a bit of both but the 2 specs nearest me just doesn’t have a great selection. At least they didn’t the last time I went.
