So we should have no trouble doing Grinnell and Highline hikes around that time? I've never been that far north so I wasn't sure how it was at that time of year. We did Tetons and Yellowstone last year on the 4th week and it was perfect.

Any place you recommend near the park for fireworks on the 4th?

We are headed there in less than 4 months. Could I backchannel you for hiking suggestions? Also curious to get your thoughts on where to eat in Whitefish and day activities with kids.

It varies a lot from year to year. In 2011 it was a massive snow year and Going to the Sun wasn't close to opening on July 4; so we altered plans and hit it in late August.

Tioga Pass in Yosemite is the same way. Opening and closing dates vary a lot.

Park officials are guesstimating that the road will fully open sometime in early July. Of course, that date can and will likely change as long as progress is made. They began plowing this week on the west side.

The Tetons and Yellowstone are much higher which means the snow melts off much quicker. Plus, it's more open so Glacier will likely have snow all year this year in some areas. Grinnell Glacier hike didn't open til mid July last year.

For the 4th, you can go to Bigfork for a parade:

At night come to Whitefish. Our town has a great fireworks display.

Whitefish in the summer is fantastic. You can check out City Beach, or a couple state parks on Whitefish Lake that offer swimming for the kids. You can also rent a canoe or kayak and float the lake.

Big Mountain has zip lining, lunch at summit house, etc. You can either hike the Danny On (I recommend) up to the top or take the gondola.

Outside of Whitefish there is Montana's largest water park in Columbia Falls. There is also a fun house and zip lining near Bad Rock Canyon, which may be enjoyable for the kids.

In Coram, we have a entertainment complex with bumper boats, go karts, putt putt etc. There is also a tree ropes course called Glacier Highline.

There are a ton of rafting companies too if you're into that.

There's basically anything you could ever want to do here in terms of outdoors, its just trying to fit it all into one trip

Whitefish lunch options are a little limited based on the fact that a lot of places don't open till 4pm. Buffalo Cafe, Loula's, and Swift Creek Cafe are pretty good brunch spots. Second Street Pizza has pretty good pizza, and other options are Mackenzie River (known for their pizza), Bonsai for a good burger, Piggyback for southern style BBQ, Mama Blanca's for decent latin food, Zucca inside the marketplace for a good salad. For wings go to Bulldog.

Anyone have hike recs for Grand Teton + Yellowstone? Heading up that way in a month. I'll be with some people who can't do anything strenuous, but I'll likely squeeze in the Cascade Canyon hike alone.

Glacier - and it isn't even close. The view from my Many Glacier Lodge hotel window one morning. Best picture I have ever taken.

Roger, in flipping through old threads you seem to know a good bit about photography.

Give me one or two <$1000 mirrorless or DSLR + lens setups for someone with no real photography experience and wants to take decent outdoor photos that can be blown up past 18x20 and framed.

In doing a couple hours of research, it looks like a6000 and E-M10 Mark II night be the best bodies in that range.
