If I recall correctly, we had Garrido, Bertman, Clemens, McDonald, and Meineiri all in the Box on the same weekend. Possibly even on the same night. Thats a whole lot of college baseball royalty right there.

I remember wondering which one was older - Skip or Augie. Augie looked middle aged next to Skip. He even threw the first pitch a lot better.

You just never know. If I had to bet which one would kick the bucket first, I would have put a lot of money on Skip.

A great coach and college baseball legend. Very decent man. Only Skip Bertman ranks higher in my opinion as far as accomplishments.

He said Augie was cool as they came in SoCal back then.

I met him a couple of times when I was playing high school ball in California back in the early seventies and he was at Cal Poly and then Fullerton. He did seem like a pretty cool coach/person the few times I had the opportunity to meet him.

A few of my high school teammates played for him at both schools and all had nothing but positive things to say about him.

RIP Coach Garrido.

Augie gave my old coach the nickname Tin Man because he took so long to warm up. The name stuck. I don't think I ever learned his real name ha, just called him Tin Man.
