Before the 1300s?
Probably not that many records to go by.
But here is an historian's article: The ancient Romans debated weapon control

But here is an historian's article: The ancient Romans debated weapon control
quote:
After episodes of violence, such as those experienced in the late Roman Republic, Roman elites and emperors responded with legislation that instituted bans on weapons. These laws were directed either at a certain class of people or instituted within a delineated space.
An example of this comes following the Second Servile War, which occurred from 104 to 100 BCE on the island of Sicily. Most of us are familiar with the later occurrence of the third slave revolt of the late Republic, which saw the rise of the famed Thracian gladiator Spartacus. However, it was after the second revolt on the island of Sicily that all slaves appear to have been banned from carrying weapons. Cicero would later note that slaves still were not allowed to carry arms on the island.
quote:
One of the frustrations that comes from studying ancient history is that people always want numbers. Students crave the comfort of data that I cannot usually provide them. This is the case for Roman weapon bans as well. Can I tell you if the murder or violent crime rate went down after these laws? No. But I can say that the reason that the sacred pomerium line existed around the city of Rome was to instill in the Roman people a sense that violence was irreligious and unacceptable in certain spaces. Augustus’ laws tried to reassert and reclaim this belief both within the city and within the empire.

I heard a conversation yesterday about causes of death in the UK, and how common it is to read "killed by knife" there now.

Life expectancy was in the 30's so...
Posted on 3/9/18 at 6:27 am to SquirrelyBama
after julius caesar got cut up the roman senate passed serious knife control legislation

The liberals were screaming for stone control

There were many "equalizers" throughout history. The club, the spear, the bow & arrow, the crossbow, swords, knives, poison - all before firearms were invented. All of these things are still used in the commission of crime.
Why do people focus so much on guns?

World before Guns?
Did you ever see Braveheart?
How about the Vikings Series that comes on History?
Pretty damn brutal to be axed, sliced or bludgeoned to death.
Which leads to the fact that King of England had tried to disarm the Scots, as far as swords and "modern weapons" of the time. It didn't work out too well for them either.
What is that saying as I am paraphrasing..."God Made Men but Samuel Colt Made Men Equal"?

Figure a bunch of 0's in with the remainder living to 80 and the outcome is around the 30's. Like 0 + 80 + 0 + 80 = 160; 160/4 = 40. Add another 0 and you get 160/5 with a 60% infant mortality rate.
Half or more infants died prior to modern medicine. The surviving remainder lived to old age generally. It wasn't a bunch of people dying in their 30's.

Liberals couldn't get a ban on crossbows so they were trying to get arrow heads outlawed. Stoning deaths were at an all time high?

This will be difficult to assess. A much easier stat to find would be the 56 million people that were slaughtered after government sanction gun confiscation in the 1900s.

Posted on 3/9/18 at 7:35 am to SquirrelyBama
Cain killed Abel when there were like 10 people so that was a huge rate

Weapon control? Hell, it was against the law for Roman soldiers to wear their uniforms in the city under the Republic.
(Yeah, the HBO character I most identify with is Rome's Lucius Vorenus, wanna fight about it?)
Let that sink in...
