Brother had an older beagle and he got a lab. They did well together.

I came here to say Bassett
It's hilarious to watch a basset and beagle play. They're both of small stature, but the bassett outweighs the beagle by a factor of two.

My great pyrenees is beast friends with a blue heeler. Pretty much polar opposite dogs in temperament.

I didn't figure huskies to be good hot weathered dogs. Is this a misconception?
They do fine. They have an undercoat that helps insulate them from the heat.

One beagle is a handful so I'd prefer another breed.
If you think a beagle is a handful, stay as far as possible from anything with any lab blood. They're absolutely destructive until they're about 5 years old.

I have an old beagle that loves and gets along with little toy dogs, hates and is afraid of larger dogs. One thing about beagles is that they have a greater range of personalities than most dog breeds. The answer to your question depends more on your beagle's particular personality.
I had one beagle that was batshit crazy and aggressive to other dogs, and another beagle that is the chillest nicest agreeable dog of all time.
