China isn't playing by the same rules we are (going to the extent to manipulate their currency and turn blind eyes to labor abuses) which means laissez-faire becomes a noose.
When a foreign government is trying to own your market, you either fight back or be their bitch.

They'll go up. Hooray for US steel
Chinese metals are terrible. I, for one, will welcome paying a premium on metals with fewer impurities. Maybe we can actually get "stainless" steel that doesn't rust.

So then why don't we impose steel/aluminum tariffs on China? We're getting less than 10% of our imports from China.

No idea. Maybe mid-term bribes to the Rust Belt?
I would rather see targeted tariffs rather than a blanket increase. With Trump though, this may all be a negotiating tactic for something else.

No it doesn't.
Government interference in the free market only hurts consumers.

We effectively are in most industries where quality control would be considered important for safety reasons. Most companies have AMLs on steel products and across he board “no Chinese or Indian” material requirements in their specifications. This would be damaging from the standpoint of obtaining materials which are superior to anything The US can currently produce (specifically German made steel). On the other hand it could jumpstart the quality of US steel production, but that would take quite a while.

I can't see any downside here, the solar panel tariffs were a huge success!

This is one of the 50% of things we will agree on.

Yes it does! You are taking free trade into territory it is not, nor has ever been until the ROMENY and BUSH family changed it.
You are continuing their warped view that killed our jobs so that THEY could make a lot of money.
You can not explain how it hurts the consumer. PLEASE explain it!

I really don't know but if China dumped cheap steel and aluminium to kill our industry and corner the market how would you feel then?

Is there a difference between national free market and global free market?
This is just a way to boost the domestic industry isn't it?

Your taco truck will be made from US aluminum and have overpriced food as a result. Deal with it.

I would rather we deregulate than impose tariffs.
