I've never seen a study comparing the likelihood of either succeeding, and until I do I have to consider this speculation.

I mean, if you agree my solution would help why not agree with it and then if you also want stricter gun laws pursue those as well. While I don't really agree with the gun laws I've seen presented, because they don't seem like they'd be effective without infringing on 2nd amendment rights to me, I still don't see why the two ideas are mutually exclusive.

As far as gun laws are concerned, the real thing you have to contend with is that a lot of people in this country (including the founders, as the constitution supports this, at least in its current form) believe that the positives of the fundamental rights outlined in the bill of rights, (including gun ownership) outweigh the negative consequences of those rights, whatever that may be. Until that fundamental right is overturned, I don't see how any effective gun legislation will be either condoned or constitutional.
