And they're right. Shared religion is the basis for any kind of political solidarity in the ME - nations with pluralities or significant minority religions/sects experience much more discord than ones that are homogenous in that respect. Short of that, absolutist authority of some sort is required to uphold order.

Not saying they are wrong, just noting the similarity. My non believer sensibilities get the best of me when political leadership starts calling for religious zealotry.
