I think most of these shooters have a vendetta against one or more of their classmates or teachers, and shooting them is much more personal then attempting to kill them with a bomb. I think if their sole intent was to kill as many people as possible you would see more bombs being used. A bomb like the one used at the Boston marathon in the middle of a school cafeteria would be devastating.

This was going to be my response. While I imagine the shooter frequently gets lost in the adrenaline at some point, I have to think the first couple of trigger pulls are the height of intentional.

Don't forget poisons!

Even easier to obtain, conceal, and apply than a bomb and safer for the perp too. Just also so much more impersonal, so much less "instant impact" gratification from the boom and splat of a firearm (like video games).

These nutcases want that control over and immediate feedback for their actions. Bombs and poisons and chem/bio weapons are terror weapons and not revenge stuff.
