Last fall, a Mississippi bail bondsman and frequent YouTube vlogger noticed an alarming comment left on one of his videos. "I'm going to be a professional school shooter," said a user named Nikolas Cruz. The YouTuber, 36-year-old Ben Bennight, alerted the FBI, emailing a screenshot of the comment to the bureau's tips account. He also flagged the comment to YouTube, which removed it from the video. Agents with the bureau's Mississippi field office got back to him "immediately," Bennight said, and conducted an in-person interview the following day, on Sept. 25. "They came to my office the next morning and asked me if I knew anything about the person," Bennight told BuzzFeed News. "I didn't. They took a copy of the screenshot and that was the last I heard from them." FBI agents contacted Bennight again Wednesday, after a 19-year-old named Nikolas Cruz allegedly opened fire at a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in south Florida, killing at least 17 people.

They were too busy covering up a coup attempt

Let's be real here, do we really expect the government to investigate every oddball comment on the internet?
It's not possible or practical.

Well, the FBI was busy with other things last year.

They should make some attempt for extremely specific comments such as that.

FBI too busy instigating "terrorists" online to care about this.

I'm thinking that in my younger days I might make a comment like that just to be edgy and attempting to be humorous - but I think it would have to be in the context of some obvious joking situation with a group of friends that understood it for what it was.
I can't see myself making a comment like that in a random situation or amongst strangers.

No. But they sure do spend a lot of time on dumb shite.

Why do we even have an FBI if they don’t do their real job and instead are used as a political weapon?

That's why they have field offices all over the U.S.

My thoughts too - but in this case it looks like they did follow up on the comment.

They were chasing Russians.

They did investigate it. The kid had been expelled from school for making threats.

They seemed interested enough to interview the person who contacted them the very next day.....
What happened from there?

They were too busy wiretapping Trump Tower

There are lots of instances where the FBI is warned, but saying something inflammatory or suspicious on social media isn't a crime in most instances. And I'm sure that the FBI gets tons of reports like this and aren't capable of hashing all of them out.

Probably not a ton, unless they found something concrete. I mean, are we jailing this guy long term for a YouTube comment? You interview him- you maybe get lucky and figure something out but more likely you just start a file on the dude and go look into the next crazy comment that was reported.

Someone should be held accountable from the FBI
