Boston and surrounding area

I got sub-$200 Southwest flights to Boston from NO for Spring Break week (Mar 31-Apr 7) for wife and I and kids (ages 7-14).
We will be there 6 full days and portions of 2 and for 7 nights. We will likely get a rental car.
What are must-do’s in Boston and surrounding area?
Considering driving up to Killington, Vermont for snowskiing/snow tubing for a couple of those days.

The Boston sub-reddit is actually super helpful and full of useful information...worth a browse.

Sorry to keep you waiting.
I wouldn’t rent a car for any day that you’re staying in the city. Trust me you’re MUCH better off taking the T and Ubering places. And the city is very walkable.
With kids, I would recommend doing some of the more touristy stuff - The Freedom Trail, Duck Tour, the Science Museum, etc.
I’d keep an eye on snowfall because at least in the city it’s been a really mild year. There may not be enough powder in Killington at that time to ski. But there are plenty of other great places to rent a car and drive to if you’re open to other suggestions.

Thanks.
So maybe we just rent car for any road trips.
Folks at Killington said they always claim they are first open and last closed and that last season there was skiing until June.
We will get a plan B in place though.
What other road trips do you recommend?

Yes definitely do not rent a car to get around Boston. People drive like idiots here, and honestly you’d spend more time/money dealing with parking than it’s worth. The T (metro) can get you just about anywhere you want to go, and an Uber is much more convenient since you get dropped off right where you need to be rather than fighting to find parking.
Depends on how far you want to go and what you’d like to do/see. All within a 2 hour drive are:
Newport, RI
Portland, ME
Portsmouth, NH
Provincetown, MA (this is actually a long drive but there’s a ferry that will get you there in 90 minutes)
If you’re willing to go further (3ish hours), there’s also Burlington, VT and Stowe, VT.

Depends a bit on your budget, but frankly as long as you're near a T stop (preferably the red line) you'd be fine.
If I were you I'd ideally want to be in or near the Back Bay, so check out the Omni Parker Hotel. There's also the Fairmont Copley which is great. The best thing about the Fairmont is their "Ambassador" that is there every day to greet guests. Her name is Carly Copley and she's awesome (RIP Catie Copley):
The W is a great hotel just a few blocks from the Common.
If you can swing it, of course you can't beat the Four Seasons in terms of accomodations and location, but that's way up there in budget.

Amen. I rented a car for my day trip out of boston, and was so terrified of driving out of the city that i just went ahead and purchased the extra insurance program through Hertz.

It used to freak me out when I first moved here, now I'm just another one of those idiots on the road.

Consider getting to Cape Cod and taking the ferry to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard.
Or you all can fly directly from BOS via Cape Air, that’s always an option on the front of back end of your trip.
Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard are beautiful.
I’d probably choose Nantucket with young kids.
The ferry goes to Hyannis from there, that’s close to Woods Hole.

Do not get the rental until you need it for any day trips from Boston you want to make. You will end up paying a couple hundred in parking fees just to park in the city.
As far as day trips, Newport RI is worth the trip.
Portland Maine is worth it as well and you could also stop along the way in Kennebunk area and a little further is Freeport. Anything past that into Maine would be too far. Acadia National Park is really cool but about 3 hour trip.
Driving to Cape is neat as well and even if you didn't make it all the way to Provincetown you could stop in the other areas if you drive it.
You can catch the ferry to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket from Hyannis.
