Paying $20,000 for a slice of bread would be ridiculous, because it is a slice of bread, and there are no reasons why it should be $20,000. Paying $20,000 for a car may or may not be considered ridiculous for reasons like how much it costs to make, what it can do, the amount of use you will get out of it...
Doesn't matter how much it costs to make it...the question is about value in performance and operations.
Someone else used the Galaxy S7 as an example. You can get one brand new for $380 at best buy.
Are you telling me that an Iphone X is well over 100%(twice) better than an S7 from a performance perspective? And if so, why? because it costs apple more to make it?

But that is not what decides cost in our glorious capitalistic market. It's about what the company can charge and the people are willing to pay. Obviously the people Apple is wanting to sell this phone to are willing to pay this cost. You may not be, but what you believe something should cost because of your perceived reasons for that cost is of no concern to the market.
