I got a used motoplay z last year for $250 shipped no tax no activation fee. I added a 128gig micro SD. This phone does everything a $1000 can do that I care about. So yes $1000 is absurd to me.

To me this is the correct answer:
If you have certain needs and don't want to research your options or don't know better (like adding external memory), you will buy the $1,000 because you personally think it meets your needs and is worth that.
If you feel other, less expensive phones meet your need, then you won't pay $1,000 for a phone.
It is like broadband - If you are not a heavy user, you won't see the inherent value in paying for a gig of service. If you require more bandwidth and higher speeds (or you may just be one of those that likes "the new flashy thing") then you will see the value.
