This is from last November, so those manufacturing costs are even less now.

The price isn't $999 because it costs so much more to make. Samsung has been making $650 OLED phones for what, 2-3 years? The price was set so high to artificially lower demand because Apple couldn't get enough OLED screens to make this the primary model that people bought.
