The price isn't $999 because it costs so much more to make. Samsung has been making $650 OLED phones for what, 2-3 years? The price was set so high to artificially lower demand because Apple couldn't get enough OLED screens to make this the primary model that people bought.

fwiw, the Wall Street Journal reported the component cost at $581 per iPhone X
