Edit: It's the same reason why laptops and ultrabooks are so much more expensive then their desktop counterpart

The devices being sold for $1k are probably accurately priced for what they are. The fact that some are selling is evidence that people will buy them.
What's ridiculous to me is the fact that companies are building and people are buying these $1k phones. It is absolutely, 100%, ridiculously unnecessary.

the Ipad mini, which is barely bigger than an iphone, does basically everything an Iphone does, yet costs half the price.
Iphones cost what they costs, b/c morons are willing to pay for it. It's literally that simple.
