I bike a ton during the summer up north in Nebraska and lift and run indoors during the long winter. I’ve been on a racing (biking) team for a few years, What workouts do yall do, i thiink swimming would be a great workout to prepare for the season in a few months

I swim 4x per week. 3000-4000 yds in an hour, depending on how much kicking and quality swimming I do. Always broken into sets. I rarely swim more than 200yds per rep. Mix of plenty kicking and pulling. Lift 1x per week. Upper body and core. I skip leg day.

Yes it is. But I’m still not going to participate in leg day.

Do you mix up different strokes?

There are plenty of workouts online in different plsces. But typically a swim workout would be something like
500 easy to warm up
10x100yd moderate with 12 seconds rest
15x50yd hard with 10 seconds rest
500 easy cool down.
As you get better, increase the number of 100's. Once you can knock off 20 of them, start throwing in some 200's.
And once you learn to use a pace clock, then no need for counting seconds of rest. You just know when to leave the wall based on clock times. Just finish your interval with enough time to get rest before your next leave time comes up. When it gets easy, add more reps or shorten your leave time.

Yeah, haha. I can crack 3k in an hour. Not touching 4k though. Thats a 1:30 pace with no rests.
Just beat my personal best in a 1000 yd time trial at a 1:38 pace. One day I'm going to break 1:30, but for a 1k TT, that's only 15 minutes

Try to find a Masters Swim group in your area. It will be a coached workout and you decide which lane you want to be in from the fast lane (My group has olympic medalist/ world champ medalist and former all americans in lane 1) to the slow lane (My group has little old ladies and people that struggle to break 1:15 for a 50 meter swim). I'm somewhere in the middle and get about 3000 meters in in an hour....assuming I get there on time.

How much do you pay for your masters swim group? It's like 90 bucks a month where I'm at. I go to a "masters style" swim practice that comes free with a club I'm already a part of, but to be honest, I'm the fastest adult there. Only the juniors actually push me, and that's only when I catch them out of my side view since they aren't in the same lanes. I've looked into the actual masters grouo in my area, but like I said, it's pricey and the schedule is inconvenient for me.

It's $80/month but there are 3 workouts a day at 2 locations near me.early am, lunch which I do and evening. There are practices all over dfw for people that live in the burbs.

Hi, I have heard that swimming helps to reduce weight.

Swimming burns calories, therefore it will help you lose weight. However, there are definitely ways to burn more calories in the same amount of time. Running for instance. An hour of swimming is probably 500 or so calories. An hour of running is probably around 900.

Thanks but I’m not really a kid anymore. 41 now.
Someone else asked if I mix up strokes. Not really. I’m a freestyler. I’ll throw in some 100s IM or 50s fly or back every now and then, but mostly work on free.
