Mike Archer was worse because of who they turned down- Steve Spurrier and Mike Shanahan for starters.

Always wondered what Shanahan & Spurrier would've done in Purple & Gold.

If Herman turns out to be the next Spurrier, that will change.

O is the worst decision of the three. Archer was a promotion from within. There are other highly successful coaches (like Osborne) who were promoted from within. Hallman was a young up and comer. Just like Urban Meyer. A lot if schools would have taken him.

O was a catastrophic failure at his previous gig. Only one coach (Stallings) won a title after being fired from an earlier gig, and at least he had a conference title under his belt.

Wait, so because Alleva did not conduct a real search hiring O was better than the decision to hire Archer? If LSU contacted Urban Meyer would hiring O then be the worst of all time?

. At the time, Archer was the up and coming name in DCs. Shannahan didn’t have any HC experience yet. Spurrierdid but he didn’t have the resume he has now. Archer was the recommendation of the departing head coach who had an incredibly successful tenure.

It was our second coordinator promotion, neither ended great, but clearly LSU learned from that not to promote untested coordinators. Instead we promoted a D line coach with an impressive resume of losing as a full time head coach. Let’s hope and pray LSU didn’t make another mistake.

When Texas is a consistent contender you might be walking that statement back.

Mike Archer was, because he took over following Bill Arnsparger who had the program headed in the right direction.During Mike Archer's tenure the program regressed badly.
