the back up plan would have been to give up on Surtain and tell the other kids LSU was moving on from him. I don't believe there was any situation we get Surtain and the backup plans. It always puts always puts coaches in a bad spot when your biggest commit flips on signing day. It doesn't give you any time to fill that spot because all your backup plans have to commit elsewhere that late in the game. There very rarely is a back-up plan that is actually feasible. It would have been different if he wasn't committed at all and we could have planned things differently. Surtain flipping was going to suck regardless. There is no situation where it wouldn't have caused a meltdown.

I think the only thing we could have done is give Surtain an ultimatum, for better or worse, that he needed to sign during the early period or we were moving on. And I don't think that would have sat well with our fans either.
