Throughout history, slavery was just something you did to conquered peoples. It sucked, but it wasn't discriminatory as a rule. Honestly, the further back you go, the more it was kind of a win/win: the conquerer profits off the conquered, and the conquered doesn't get wiped off the face of the earth.
