It's not expected, nor was it planned to land on Mars. It's supposed to remain in a heliocentric orbit at about the distance of Mars. It was to prove they could launch so much payload and get it that far out.

That would be Alan Shepard. After he hit the shot that went “miles and miles” one of the guys at mission control chimed in that it looked like a bit of a slice.
Proving the fact that even on the moon your buddies will still give you shite about your golf game.
