Musings on Bill Belichick and the Patriots

Stoned thoughts coming in..holy wall of text..TL'DR
There were alot of rumors coming out of Patriots camp this season and looking at the overall picture of Bill Belichick..I really don’t know if there was some truth to them or if it was just click bait fodder from that rag, ESPN
BB is one of the GOATs in coaching lore, its clear at this point. He learned under another NFL all timer and it would be difficult to find someone with BB’s football knowledge in the history of the game. He’s also a guy who is obsessive with winning to the point of bending the rules as far as they can be bent without having a severe consequence. And its known that he is the one guy who has complete control of football operations for an NFL team. With the people he is hiring it is truly ‘You buy into what I’m selling or you can take a walk.” BB biggest asset is his ability to read people. You can see it when he is observing players at the combine. He’s up there, not conversing much with the other coaches or sitting near them. He is intently scanning the players and trying to figure out who has skills he can utiize, if he can get them at a reasonable cost, and most importantly if they will buy into his process at the cost of being selfless for the team. (Look at Gronk, he parties hard for the summer but when football season comes around, game time. Unfortuantely Aaron Hernandez, he was the same way in regards to showing up to play, but Bill did misfire and missed that the guy was a psychopath, which can be overlooked if someone knows how to cover those feelings in an interview)
There were rumors that BB wanted to move on from Brady for Garoppolo, I have no problem believing this. BB would do whats best for the team and sees players as expendable in that regard. If Brady’s guru bothered BB as much as we know he probably did. Interferring in his day to day operations. It probably would still be difficult for BB to let Brady go since Brady does still look as if he could go a few more years. Brady also has that desire that BB covets. Bill has let plenty of players go and you know all of them bought into his system or they wouldn’t have been there. They all seem to leave the organization saying the same thing “Thank you NE, Kraft, and BB for the opportunity, yada yada yada”. Of all the backups that Brady has had, BB saw that Garoppolo had ‘it’, the tools plus that mental toughness and belief in himself, but not the false confidence version. It’s not a coincidence that Bill traded Garoppolo as far away as he possibly could, the polar opposite division/team. At the cost of better offers rumored to be on the table. The only chance they meet in a game that “matters” is the Super Bowl. That’s more valuable for BB to avoid. BB and Brady are in it to win rings each year and two of the best ever. But I do think BB would have stuck around longer than Brady in the NFL if he still had Garoppolo
As for Malcolm Butler…Bill Belichick sat Malcolm Butler on defense and only played him on special teams because they needed a body out there. Based on rumors it was due to being sick, having a poor week of practice, and he probably broke the curfew doing something he shouldn’t have been doing during the climax of BB’s process. BB is the coach who would let Butler know how selfish he was by sitting him in the the championship game and letting him be the one who abandoned his teammates. BB was going to let the others know that it would not be tolerated. Apparently that divided the locker room. Someone on here made a thread that the Patriots didn’t look as if they were trying out there, I wouldn’t say its because they weren’t trying, they are still professionals who want to win and one of the best coached teams in football. They do the little things right and put the team first, both of those can overcome talent deficit’s on the individual level. But its correct to say that something was off in their body language as a team, you couldn’t really place it at the time but if the locker room was indeed divided over Bill sitting their best corner, that would explain what we saw.
TL’DR: Bill Belichick is on the Mt. Rushmore of coaches. Tom Brady is on the Rushmore of QBs. There were rumors about the organization this year. Bill has always put forth that its about the team first, and when Butler disobeyed, the team suffered.

Obviously that was too long for anyone to read, especially in that wall, however I’m proud of that effort. Anyone who tries to shut this man down doesn’t realize the effort involved in writing an 300 page essay while stoned as hell. I’d say bravo on coming strong.
Next time I get insanely high (which I would never do of course), then I’ll convert this into a PowerPoint slide deck so we can do deeper analysis. Regardless it seems like you’re buying strong stuff so kudos to you once again.

Belichek has made some bad decisions the last year:
1. the Kony Ealy trade- lost picks only to release the guy
2. the cassius marsh trade-
3. the Philip Dorsett trade
4. the garrapolo trade and getting back one pick and Hoyer
5. the Dwayne Allen trade
6. I feel the Butler benching was just stubborn old man syndrome- bad decision IMO
I can see why he made the Allen and Ealy trade being thin at those positions but a lot of draft picks lost for nothing to show for it

Dorsett and Allen weren’t world beaters for the Pats but ended up serving their purpose
Allen was an excellent blocking #2 TE and Dorsett gave the pats some WR depth they desperately needed after Mitchell and Edelman didn’t play, and served as Cooks insurance in the SB, in which again he didn’t have big numbers but atleast could run the vertical routes that have been such a part of the Pats offense this year.
Ealy and Marsh were dart throws to help salvage a completely depleted front 7. Didn’t work out but that’s why they are dart throws.
And everyone has hindsight about the garrappollo trade. The browns offered a 2nd and a 3rd. BB decided to go with the 49ers instead because of the relationship he has with some of the front office there. The god father offers people assume the Pats got for Jimmy simply weren’t there.
ETA I believe the Pats have the greatest number of players on IR for a team to ever reach a Super Bowl. It’s crazy how good they ended up being despite losing Edelman, Hightower, their top draft choice, Rob Nink, Mitchell, Marcus Cannon, and a bunch of other role players in that front 7
This was one of Bills best coaching jobs.

They had 15 guys on IR. That was good for 20th most in the league. I doubt they had the greatest number of players on IR for a team to reach the Superbowl. Hell, your opponent in the SB only had two less players on IR.
To be fair, when you look at it by cap impact instead of # of players, they are 10th in the league.

The combo of no Edelman and cooks being taken out in 1st half was game.

Might’ve misread the tweet I heard that stat on.

I mean, your point still remains though. With the impact guys they lost, BB did a great job of getting them to the SB.

Seems to be a trend in the Pats organization (Ex. Kraft/Indy situation)

Ain't nobody got time for that

I agree, but why wait until the Super Bowl to display that pettiness?

IDK why you would be stupid enough to pull this 15-20 mins before the SB. But it's comical.
Also, didn't BB cut Randy Moss because of being late to team breakfast or an argument of some kind?

Sativa, brah. It was 1 in the morning.
That doesn't make any sense for him to wait that long to "punish" Butler if its something that occurred during the offseason. I'm sure Bill is a petty guy and didn't like that Butler did that, he's human. But the thing that matters to him is winning. Butler would have had to do something recent to piss him off that was the tipping point.
I wouldn't call it hindsight, Jimmy G did have the makings of a backup in a situation ala Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers. A guy who could actually win a starting job but had an all-timer in front of him. shite happens.

Moss was a malcontent that entire season because they wouldn’t sign him to a new contract because they didn’t feel like he had much left in the tank (which they ended up being right on). He was mouthing off to the media all year which is why B.B. got rid of him
And they traded him mid season to the Vikings for a 3rd round pick. Idk what meeting or breakfast you’re talking about. He got cut in Minnesota less than a month after the trade after he mouthed off to the media again about Vikings players/coaches. And he was a shell of himself after that
