Don't expect Drew Brees' contract to be as big as Alex Smith deal
ESPN Link story by Mike Triplett

Snippet of article
quote:

The Saints have made it clear that they only want to pay Brees one year at a time now that he is 39 years old. And Brees has been willing to play ball.

Two years ago, Brees settled for a one-year, $24.25 million extension when he was heading into the final year of his deal. Last year, Brees and the Saints didn't even talk about an extension and allowed his contract to run out.

There is no reason to expect things to change now. If Brees didn't demand long-term security when he was 37 or 38 years old, why would he suddenly demand it now?

What is your reaction to article. Part of me wants a "long term" like 3 year real time commitment (4 yr type deal) to Drew Brees. Don't really care for a year to year type approach although i guess Saints enjoy keeping their future options open. Do you agree that a 1 yr type deal is the more likely outcome here?

I'd be kind of surprised if it wasn't at least a 2 year deal.

I don’t see any reason from Drew’s side why he’d accept a one year deal.

While it may wind up a true 1 year deal, I expect it to still have 2-4 dummy years tacked on to spread the hit like we did last year.

And honestly if Brees is cool with this it does protect us some if he hits that wall. And it will surely keep him motivated as he's playing for a new deal every year.

i mean damn... we already have 6 mill on books for year's 2 and 3.

If we add more dead cap to those years just for another 1 yr deal i'll be pretty pissed.

Saints are idiots if they're only trying for 1 year deals

Exactly. It's time for the Cousins train to roll into NOLA.

If we don't spread the hit then he'd eat up most of our cap this year.

Plus it's best to spread it to later years for when he leaves because at that point we'd no longer be paying $25-30 mil for a QB.

It's basically taking out a loan from future years to have a better team for the next 2-3 years with Brees. We should be trying to win now, not worrying about the extra $5-10 mil it may add for 2-3 years once he's gone.

i just can't see it as much as it sorts of makes sense, then there's just no ways it actually happens that way. I mean, we'd have to enter FA knowingly pissing drew off and then knowingly know that we're competing with more cap available teams in bidding for Kirk's services.

Not to mention the extra $12 mil hitting the cap if Brees hits FA, basically leaving us hamstrung if we spend big bucks on Capt. Kirk.

i mean that alone doesn't bother me that much and still think there's plenty ways to get it done regardless. freeing up 6 each of next consecutive years help a bunch too.

I don't think its happening but it makes sense.

SP's record and our talent could probably bring him in for less than the bidding war that will ensue.

Vikings are intriguing.

Everyone assumes there options are: Bradford/Bridgewater/Keenum... what if they say screw all you, Hello Kirk.... with that defense and offensive weapons...

The trade-up for Mayfield is going to happen. We are going to give up quite a bit, but Payton is in love with him, and with the O-line we have in place and the young offensive weapons on the team, the time to get the QB of the future makes sense.

Other needs can be addressed via free agency.

He said on air in the week leading up to Minnesota that he would trade all of his money back for this opportunity. So now he needs to put his money where his mouth is and take a more team friendly deal

Baker may not even make it out of top 5. Just no way we can get that high.

Questions about his attitude and height will cause him to drop. NFL GMs fall in love with the 6'4" prototypical passer and Mayfield will slide some. Saints may not have to give up that much in the end to get him, should that be the plan.

Which I'm not saying this is what I want them to definitely do, but I would understand if they did.

One of these teams: Brown, Broncos, Jets, or Giants will sign Cousins, taking them out of the QB hunt.

I feel Allen, Rosen, and Darnold will go before Mayfield.

One mock has Mayfield going at #5, which may happen if Cousins isn't signed by Denver. Kiper has a mock where Mayfield is gone at #13 to Washington, which after the Alex Smith trade isn't going to happen. If Mayfield gets passed Arizona, then watch for the Saints to leap Buffalo to go after him.
