Best Gun for Home defense

Had an issue about a week ago. Not willing to discuss but what is better a pistol or a shotgun? I have heard arguments for both. Any particular brand better? what would be the best shot capacity? What would the OT gun guru's recommend?

get an 870 home defense 12 guage. don't get one of those pistol grip shot guns that you can't shoulder.
edit: you can get an 870 at most wal marts and the academy might have the tactical home defense version. I don't know what the law is but you can have a gun smith cut the barrel of the 870 express hunting version down for you and it is basically the same as the tactical (5 rounds instead of 8 though, right?). They aren't exspensive. I have had one for 12 years and have used it as a paddle and a club. they are reliable as all get out.
Don't get something just because it looks or sounds cool. An ar-15 is ok but it isn't something i would want to be fumbling with at close quarters at night. one shot with the 870 is all you will probably need. the taurus judge that has been posted a few times is a gimmick gun, don't go with that.
you're best bet in terms of reliability, ease of use, and power is a decent 12 gauge pump shotgun.

that 870 looks like a bad arse. Will put that one on the list.

If you get a shotgun get a tactical model that's a bit shorter and easier to handle in a smaller space. Remington has made the 870 for decades and it's fairly inexpensive. I use a Colt 45.

You don't want wall penetration (i.e. shoot someone sleeping in the next room) and you want to cover a bunch of area. Get a shotgun and load it with bird shot.
I have a Mossberg Thunder Ranch 500 .

This is the right answer though. Mount a rack bedside.

From personal experience, the pump sound of a 12 gauge shotgun was sufficient.

If you have a SO that's not comfortable with using a gun, get a youth model shot gun. It's short enough for her to handle and she doesn't need to aim very well since the shot spreads. She just needs to point into the direction of the mother fricker who decides to break in and pull the trigger. I guarantee they will run the other way.
