Laguna Beach is a nice beach town...... There is a beach in Laguna Nigel that used to be hidden and so just locals.... I can look it up if you're interested.

Zappa, are you thinking of the beach at The Montage? It's a nice beach and not nearly as crowded as downtown Laguna Beach. San Clemente beach is nice as well, and I believe there is one in Dana Point as well.

To the OP, if you have the option I would recommend taking the train down from Orange/Anaheim to SD if you just want to spend time in the city. That way you can avoid parking in SD and you can both enjoy the trip and view.

If time permits check out Catalina Island. Yep it's touristy but it's a fun half or full day excursion.
