You think they were swindled? Their primary focus is the eradication of Polio. Nigeria was responsible for half the new cases of polio in the not so distant past. They've only had like 6 cases since 2014, so the foundation is paying for loan now that Nigeria has shown a commitment to following through.
If you're going to donate, this seems like a pretty efficient way to do it TBH.

Japanese and Nigerians are laughing their asses off

Assuming the Japanese get their money.

I'm guessing Bill is smart enough to give them the check directly on behalf of the Nigerians.

I'm genuinely surprised by these responses. Their foundation wants to eradicate Polio. Instead of just giving Nigeria $76MM, they essentially had them do it all themselves with repayment a possibility if they stuck with the program. They did, and now the foundation is paying off the debt. What's the problem here?

Oh darn, the richest man in the world should have consulted from some dipshits who spend all day posting on tigerdroppings before paying off his this debt.

Nigeria gonna be able to borrow like kings now with a high credit rating. Bill can bail em out again in 10 years, I am sure.

The problem is Nigeria is extremely corrupt and it's very unlikely the money went to what it was intended for. I knew about a doctor who had immigrated to Europe. He wanted to donate medical supplies to Nigeria and they wouldn't accept it. They wanted him to donate money. They don't give a shite about their people because the rich and politicians all go to Europe for medical treatment.

This is one tenth of one percent of Nigeria's national debt.

$76 million could get every homeless Veteran in the US off the streets, for about 60 days, and provide food, clean clothes, haircut etc for them all, so they can go job hunting.
And this is the responsibility of a private citizen or the government?
Eradicating polio is one the top priorities for Gates' foundation.
quote:
Nigeria’s debt to Japan is the result of Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) provided by the Japanese government in 2014 for increased polio eradication efforts.
The country has made great strides in its efforts to eliminate the disease thanks to this funding.
Nigeria did not record a wild case of polio from July 2014 to August 2016, when two cases were reported.
quote:
All of this means that Nigeria is very close to eradicating polio, which would leave just two countries in the world where the disease is still endemic, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
They clearly used the loan to eradicate polio within their borders so Gates is settling the debt.

99% of the time when someone is homeless it's not just a matter of being down on their luck. To get to that point you've gotta have some pretty serious mental issues going on. Just throwing a little money at them isn't going to magically get them on track. Sad but true

Then how did cases of polio within Nigeria drop down dramatically after the loan?
Loan was given in 2014

Yeah, I think a lot of people are not getting that the Nigerians held up their end first.

Why not spend the money in America which provided him his opportunity and the vast majority of his wealth. Why pay for a corrupt regime
ETA.
Glad they eradicated it either way and let the Japs forgive the debt

You don’t think 76 mil could make a dent in those statistics?

How in the world is that his responsibility though? You can't just criticize someone for humanitarian efforts just because it wasn't a cause you personally care about.
It's his money and what's important to him is eradicating polio among other things.

I bet these dipshits could reinvest it better and give him a hefty profit, which he could then use to fund more warlords

Wait now you're saying posters here could make money better than one of the richest people on the planet?
