Beards and mustaches are as popular as ever. Why did this change?

Interesting bit of Presidential trivia - not counting sideburns (such as John Quincy Adams) - all Presidents were clean shaven until Lincoln - then all Presidents from Lincoln (1861) through Taft (through 1913) sported facial hair except Andrew Johnson and William McKinley.

That was also the worst run of luck for Presidents, with 3 shot to death and 1 impeached, although that was not directly related to the facial hair as McKinley was one of the "shot to death" and Johnson the "impeached" one.

Since Taft, not only have we had no Presidents with facial hair, there have only been 2 major party candidates to sport facial hair (both Republicans) bearded Charles Evan Hughes (lost to Woodrow Wilson in 1916) and mustachioed Thomas Dewey (lost to FDR in 1944 AND a close one to Harry S. in 1948).

The more you know...

Beards disappeared when indoor plumbing and hot water at the turn of a faucet became commonplace. Facial hair is a pain in the arse. Almost every guy who can grow a beard does so at some point. Almost every one of them gets tired of it eventually and shaves it off.

Too much soy, the last seven presidents were more likely to lactate than grow facial hair.
