It makes sense that the last Sat. appointments at a country vet clinic would be for euthanasia (and my dogs for routine work). I bring my dogs in and am in the waiting room when a crying woman comes out of the exam room with a box (cat). Older woman has a chihuahua - she brings it into the exam room and it comes out in a box. She's crying. Then, I remember that there was a sweet, beautiful gray muzzled Golden Retriever with those sad and empathetic eyes and I figured that it was in line too.

I'll be honest - no way was I going to be around when that sweet dog was put down. Golden Retrievers are such sweet looking dogs I didn't even want to see it come in. Fortunately, my dogs were next and I got the hell out of there before Golden's appointment.

To make things worse, I drove from the vet's office into town to get lunch. Truck in front of me hits and kills a young hound. Thankfully, it only lasted about a minute before it died.

I never really got why we put dogs down rather than keep treating them.
It's sad.

I dated a veterinarian for about a year. I always wanted to euthanise her.

Veterinarians have the highest suicide rate by profession. It's assumed to be because it's depressing to euthanize your own patients on a daily basis.

I know the feeling. My dad got a golden retriever 6 months before I was born. Dog lived till I was 16 yrs old. She got to the point where she could barely walk, couldn't see, hear, nothing. Just layed there mostly in pain from arthritis. Was a great duck dog. My dad loved that dog and he had to finally put her down. Took her into the back yard, petted and hugged her then shot and buried her. Only time I've seen him cry my entire life. I don't think he even cried when his sister died suddenly of a heart issue

When I had to put my Beagle to sleep I held back in the room after it was done until I could compose myself.

Sure enough, when I head out to the front of the vets office, the first person that is coming in had a Beagle with them that looked strikingly like my dog.

I cried like a bitch all over again.
