I use them because they will pair directly to smartthings without an additional hub.

They work great, but I’ve turned down the brightness bc they run hot at 100%. Cool to the touch at 50%.

did you get the OSRAM or the Sylvania bulbs? look at my update.

Bump.

The 4 br30s from the op arrived today and paired within seconds.

Color is a little richer than hue imo. Especially green. You can actually tell it's green.

So far no qualms. We'll see how they do long term.

Curious. What generation are your Hues? I have Gen 3 and greens are definitely green. I've heard the earlier generations weren't as good.

Honest question here....are most of you guys using these color changes features as more of a novelty item, or do they serve an actual purpose for you guys?

I was thinking of getting some for Shits and giggles, but I can’t seem to find a practical use for them.

Isn't everything a novelty? Do we really need a smart home?

Hue is a fantastic product if you want to "paint" your house with color.

The colored lights can also be used by a million different apps to do all kinds of shite. Just read up on it if you're curious.

Yeah I went into Best Buy the other night and their new whole home team thing is really cool. I forget what they called it Kindred on wheels or some shite.

They come set up everything for smart homes and make sure it's all running and that you know how to control it.

He was telling me they've set up a lot of man caves with lights for their teams. One Blues fan had lights all around so when the Blues scored a goal they all blinked red like a goal light. Said they've done them for football teams and stuff too.

Just one example of cool stuff you can do.

Purpose. Bright cool light in the mornings to wake up. Dimmed warm lights in the evening to relax. Purple and gold when LSU is on. Side lighting dim and red like a movie theater when I'm watching TV or if I'm playing games.

When I tell Alexa I'm leaving for work, the light at the front door turns blue if I need to grab my umbrella. When an Alexa timer goes off, the lights in the house flash in case I'm in another room and can't hear the alarm.

When I order Domino's, the instructions for the driver say to look for the green porch light. When the driver leaves the store, the porch light automatically turns green for a half hour and my inside lights flash green momentarily to let me know he's coming so I can make sure I'm ready to answer the door.

It's definitely a luxury, but it's also definitely not useless and you find yourself noticing small ways that you can use your lighting that you'd never have otherwise imagined.

Sweet. Wasn’t a knock on them by any means. I’m new to this game and I’m quickly learning that the rabbit hole goes very deep.

I may pick up a few down the road. Thanks guys.

It does, indeed, and it leads to other home automation.

I'm still interested in what generation your Hues are, CAD.

Sorry. I'm all gen2 here although one is acting up so I'm going to call Phillips and may end up with a gen3.

If you end up with a gen 3, make sure to bump this thread to let us know how it compares.

I just ended up with another gen 3 starter pack for Christmas. Another room down. Two more to go!
