The Eagles and Tom Petty have a lot in common. They are both boring generic bands that put out a lot of pop fluff. Now that a member or two has stopped breathing, many fawn over how timeless the music is. Sorry I'm still not a huge fan , but I dig a lot of Joe Walsh's solo stuff.
Best band of all time? Hell no! They might have been the 48th best band of 1972 at best.

I can see that, although I am an Eagles fan. Tom Petty always bored me personally, though.
Best band ever? IMO not even close. If best means top-selling, charting, easily accessible pop/rock, then they're in the conversation.
And as far as the Beatles sounding "dated", most bands are a product of their times. Beatles in 63, however, were entirely different from the Beatles in 69. Few bands evolved their sound like the Fab Four.

Whole lot of subjectivity up in there.
One of my he great things about art, nothing is universal.

The Eagles and Tom Petty have a lot in common. They both ripped off the Byrds, and made a lot more money doing so than the Byrds ever did.
