Why was the muffed punt recovered in the end zone not a touchdown for JC?

A muffed punt by Catholic rolled into the endzone where it was recovered by John Curtis. Catholic got a touchback and started a new drive at their own 20.
A punt touched by the receiving team is a live ball. Do LA highschool rules simply say outright that the receiving team gets a touchback in this situation, or was there something else that happened that I missed for having seen it live? If simply the rules, what is the rationale. It just seems wrong. Had JC recovered at the 1, it would have been theirs!
What if instead it was the Catholic/receiving player that had recovered it in the EZ, would it have also been Catholic ball at the twenty? So same result no matter the team that recovers?
Or maybe a Catholic recovery would be a safety? I imagine that would then require both players to refuse to recover it, since a JC recovery gives CHS the ball at 20, and a CHS recovery gives JC 2pts and the ball back.
What if it had rolled out of the endzone?
The ball had been touched prior to rolling into the endzone.
I know highschool rules don't always gibe with what we see in college or pros, or what I remember from my own far off highschool days, but this seemed odd.
Any armchair refs out there?

In high school, if the ball goes in the end zone it is a touchback no matter what, even if it was touched by the receiving team

The refs got it right, it's just a terrible rule.
Should be a touchdown.
Should be a touchdown.

Thanks. Agreed, terrible rule.
I think the equivalent rule on kickoffs, allowing the receiving team to ignore it and just let it roll around in the EZ, rather than having to cover it, is terrible too. It's a live ball!! Why not?

As soon as the ball crossed the goal line, it was a touchback. It sounded like the kid from Catholic understood the rule because they were burned by it earlier in the year. It almost looked like he kicked it into the EZ.

Or at least should have been JC’s ball at the spot of the muff.

They really need to go back to college rules

so if JC recovered the muffed punt at catholic's 1 yard line, it would have been JC ball, but since it went in the endzone, it's a touchback?
that's a terrible rule.
that's a terrible rule.

I saw a similar play but recovered by the team that muffed it called a safety this year.
The rule as is is terrible. Any high school punt returner should be taught to kick any ball inside the 10 to the endzone

The rule is clear
A kick in HS that reaches the end zone is a dead ball and a touchback.
A kick is still a kick until it is possessed
That's the rule it's been that way for a long time.
Also intentionally kicking a football while not in the act of a scrimmage or free kick is a flag - that's why returners aren't taught to do that - and yes I've called it a time or two
Saw it happen live 4 times in past two years.
Giving a dead ball to the other team at the spot of the muff - really now come on.....
Lctiger I saw there were games this year where it was called a safety twice and a TD once but the officials conferred and corrected it.
Every special teams coach knows this rule....most returners do......
Had JC recovered it before it reached to goal line it would have been the ball ...
Again a kick that reaches the goal line is a dead ball and a touchback
A kick is still a kick until it is possessed by either K or R
Both scrimmage kicks and free kicks

Rule or not this is the stupidest shite I have ever heard of.
So what happens if the punter is standing in his own end zone? He just takes the snap, drops the ball on the ground and says "Oops!" and they take the ball on the 20?

THen contact the NFHS and ask them to change it I'm sure they will value your opinion.
Very similar circumstance worked against bears earlier this year.

I don't have a dog in the hunt as far as who won the game. Couldn't care less.
But rewarding a team for being stopped on 4 plays then ON TOP OF THAT fricking up the punt is the dumbest shite I ever heard of.

What were you watching. Catholic being the receiving team on the punt had just stopped Curtis on 3 plays
Who was stopped on 4 plays.....good grief.... When a team is stopped after 4 plays e other team gets the ball at the spot after 4th play who was rewarded for being stopped and how?

Thank god some of y'all have never seen a fair catch kick....y'all might have a stroke.....
Or a punt touched by k at Rs 15 ball rolls to rs 5 r player picks it up on 5 advances a couple of yard then fumbles recovered by k........
Yeah I'll just leave you experts hanging on this one.......
