It's a little of both. If you fully immerse yourself in it and set up your entire home, it's a neat gadget that is functional. I , however, have only gotten one smart plug for mine, so it's mostly just a novelty. Even the kids have gotten a little bored with it.

things i use the dot for multiple times a day
- control music on my sonos speakers, turn the tv down from another room (its using a sonos soundbar), etc
- timers.
- intercom. 4 kids and without an intercom we're literally running all over the house just to ask a simple question
- lights/smarthome. even though most of my house triggers lights via schedules and sensor triggers, there is ALWAYS something you need to do manually and its great to be able to make that happen no matter where you are or where you left your phone

Yeah he can speak for himself. It's way more than a novelty at my household. But i use my GH's full potential.
