Advice on getting a new putter

I have been playing for over a year now and my pops wants to get me a new putter for Christmas. I've been using a shitty Wilson putter that one of buddies gave me to fill my bag. Any tips on going to find a new one?

Go somewhere that has a wide selection and putt with them until you find one that feels good. Wouldn't buy one without putting with it first.

Go to golf shop. Putt a shite load from the exact same spot with a every putter available. Tell pops to buy you the one which feels the best and has the most precise grouping of putts. Then practice putting a shite load.

go a local golf shop and putt with as many as you can. the length of the putter plays a big part IMO.

The advice about trying them out at a local shop is correct, but try to narrow the field quickly by what suits you eye ... blade, half mallet or mallet. If you can pick a style first, then move on to how it feels.

SAM putt lab if you really want to do it right

If you truly want to get a putter that actually helps you putt better, watch this and get one of the ones mentioned. The Ping Ketsch consistently rates high in testing.

Two types of faces
Milled and inserts. Figure out which on you like more and go from there.
SeeMore putters are must put withs if you're in the market for new putter. I don't own one, but I really think they have some good alignments to help someone get better.

That guy is fired up
ETA: I hit that Ping Ketch the other day and forgot the name of it, but loved it. I think Santa may bring me one.

When fooling around with putters in the pro shop, I make lots of putts with one of the Pings that isn't the Ketsch, but it's very similar. But, since I cannot pick up my ball with it, it's off the list.

Why would you need a putter to scoop it out the hole?

I never make actual putts. I just have lots of gimmes.

Once again, when do you want to go play?

I'll make it down that way eventually.

Only way to choose a putter is by putting with them and find one that gives you that magic can't miss Mojo. You can have two identical make/model/length/etc putters and one might have the mojo and one doesn't. Putting isn't a science it is art with a little magic sprinkled in. Go to the putting area in your favorite giant golf store with a bajillion putters and start hitting putts and find a putter that speaks to you. Don't just try the Scotty's, Pings, or Odysseys you have to try everything. I was once in a Dick's sporting goods just killing some time and I found a scratched up cheap crappy belly length Top Flight putter I could not miss with. I drained everything with it on their putting and I was force to buy it and put it in the bag. Out goes a Bettinardi and in goes a top Flight 42" long belly putter. I made money with it the next 3 weekends.
But sometimes a putter loses it's magic. You can't sell any of your putters you have to keep them around when your gaming putter loses it's mojo. Then you have a stable of putters you can try in your house to see if any of the old putters had their Mojo re-charged while sitting in your garage. I bought and sold 3 Odyssey #9's before I realized I just needed to keep one around as it's mojo recharged. My biggest golfing regret was selling off my Cameron JAT mid bend (similar to a Studio Design #5).

The My golf spy video posted above says everything you just posted is bullshite, but I happen to agree with you. I putted with a Ping let’s the other day and drained everything. I should’ve brought it on the spot.

Actually I think we both kind of agreed on one point. Don't just try the pretty expensive putters try everything regardless of what it looks like. Go with the one that you consistently drop putts with no matter what the name is on the putter or what it looks like.

If I cared about putting(I hate putting), I'd buy an EvnRoll today.
