I had a roommate from the Cleveland area for a couple years. Get them behind closed doors and they said the most racist stuff imaginable, n-words all over the damn place. However, as soon as they were in public, they were the first to publicly shame and/or ridicule someone for saying anything that could remotely be perceived as offensive. It's all about avoiding the appearance of racism for those people.

Also, this dude was straight up scared of black people. His lily-white-privilege suburb had like zero black people, so he was in serious culture shock in Baton Rouge. I used to take him to eat at places in the ghetto just to f&%k with him.
