many people on twitter have said that if he doesn't toss it back into field of play, it probably stands as recovered possession. one of nfl's rules that's just idiotic.

yep which would have needed it clear to overturn. It was overturned not bc he was out at that moment but bc he tossed the ball back but he did have clear possession of ball and was in bounds at first.

Where is the specific rule about maintaining possession of ball going to ground cause i'd like to read the specifics? that rule is so many kinds of retarded.

No argument sir. The player was out of bounds. They player was deemed by the replay official review booth not to be in bounds and have possession of the ball. End of story.
