Sonny does a good job of explaining the rule changes for this year. Still curious though if JUCO counts as a transfer or if it’s against the 25 Recruiting cap.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting! Gonna be interesting to see how the 25 player hard cap affects this year's class. Seems like we're in the mix for way more prospects than we can take without culling quite a few.

Counts against the recruiting cap. However in some instances you can count them back to their original class, like example they were class of 11 in high school and went a year of juco, if you had an open slot for that year, you could count them back to that class. Pretty confusing stuff.

Transfers depend on whether or not they were already considered an initial counter previously.

There is no “hard cap” of 25 either, at least not in the sense we generally think of it.

"Transfers only count against the 85-limit and do not affect signing class numbers."

Meaning, we can sign 25 freshmen / high school seniors.

The JUCO guys and Fehoko / Giles / Moss go against the 85 limit, not the actual signing class.... right?

Correct, all players count against the 85. And you are correct about Giles, Fehoko, and Moss not counting against the 25.

But it is possible for a juco to count against the 25 depending on the situation. I don’t know the backstory on our juco targets/commits so I can’t say whether they would or not...but it’s definitely possible.

Can you explain what you mean here? The article made it sound like there was no more back counting early enrollees, which, to my knowledge, was the only way a team could get away with signing more than 25.

Traore and Lewis were both non-qualifiers coming out of high school and went straight to JUCO, so I believe they're both initial counters.

Correct on those two jucos if that’s the case.

“Backcounting” is not, and was never, an official NCAA term. All rules surrounding annual limits, whether it be signee limits or initial counter limits, are worded based on the academic year. There has always been a cap on the limit for each academic year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a cap on what we call the “class”. Some of the 2018 class may enroll in January and count toward the 2017-2018 cap while the majority will enroll in the Summer or Fall and count toward the 2018-2019 cap.

The revised rule still specifically states a signee can count in either the current academic year or the following academic year depending on when their aid is initially provided, it’s just that the language has gotten more specific. I think it was fleshed out to close blue shirt type loopholes, but would really have to compare the 17-18 version to the 16-17.
