Life within big cities seems to be getting harder. Racial issues are only going to get worse. Violent crime is on the upswing, in places like New Orleans at least. Joining the police seems less appealing than ever. Changes in the economy may place downward pressure on the uneducated. Younger people now are more inclined to support the welfare state than he generations that precede them.

But urban renewal seems alive and well. People are moving back to cities despite the crime and cost of living.

I don't know which of these conflicting trends, if either, will dominate in the coming twenty years.

Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure violent crime is way down these days compared to say 20 years ago

I'm thinking that major American cities will start looking like European cities at least as you get closer to the city centers. Meaning, that the desirable places will be in the established areas like in NOLA everything west of the Industrial Canal with the slums and lower income types in the outer ring of suburbs like a New Orleans East and Kenner...it's already happening.

People with money and good paying jobs will still live within the city. New Orleans for instance would not have 1700 sq ft houses in questionable parts of town going for $500k+ if this was not the case. Obviously, living in a bigger city is not for everyone though.
