Getting started with home automation

I'm starting to look at home automation stuff. I'd like to keep everything Google Home compatible, just because that seems like the best option for me.
I'd like to start this journey with a thermostat, can anyone recommend one that I should look at? With my limited knowledge I'm leaning towards this one:
Honeywell
Any reason to look elsewhere?

Start with the highest band width you can get to your house and a kick arse router/system...

Don't get that thermostat. If you go Honeywell get the rectangle one. Ecobee is compatible with google home as well. And of course nest.

Ecobee 4
Also whatever budget you have multiply by 3 and then double it.

Isn’t that your arch nemesis?

No. He and I buy virtually every HA doodad for pennies on the dollar by keeping each other informed about clearance prices

I went ahead and ordered a Smartthings hub and Google Home. Still looking at thermostats and other items to add. Seems like this can get out of hand pretty quickly ??

I started with a thermostat, then added Amazon dots to every room, then changed out every light switch in the house. Garage door opener followed. Pool was next. The only thing I don’t have automated are my blinds and ceiling fans since apparently no one makes an affordable reliabe solution for ceiling fans in my configuration.

I was looking at blinds and didn't see many reasonable options either. Seems like it'd be a pretty easy thing to come up with.

The simple option is very expensive. Cad has an alternative which is a little bit more difficult to implement but much much cheaper.

It wasn't that expensive. Just gotta be patient.

It can be it just depends on how you implement it. I put in 15 plus Lutron switches which were not cheap.

Yes. It can be pricey. I only got into because in lucked into all those cheap switches thanks to MCtiger.
Also hit the smart things hub on sale.
I put a few outlet switches in just to play with so far, but will install everything else once we move.
