The comparison above to getting away with murder after 40 years is actually a good comparison but not for the person making it

The answer to that question is that if you saw somebody get murdered 40 years ago and kept your mouth shut for 40 years that is the reason why they're going to get away with it. The fact that you saw it happen and said nothing is the reason they're going to get away with it. The fact you are a fully grown fricking adult and said nothing for 40 years is the reason they're going to get away with it

Because unless you held on to the actual evidence for 40 years what you saw or didn't see is only useful in the court of public opinion

If the police are unable to find evidence that they could have found have you told them 40 years ago that's your fault.

You know what we don't do for 40 year old murders? We don't let some person walking to the police station and say I saw Joey do it and then just assumed Joey did it.

God help us if we ever start applying this absurd standard to every other type of crime. We're all it takes is someone stepping forward to say you did something to end your career. Then they get to go back to their living rooms and never enter a courtroom. And everyone demands that you prove you didn't do it.

That is a completely asinine system
