He was sentenced to die. However, shortly after California banned the death penalty, thus commuting all death penalty sentences to lifers.
Further, he is a wicked man, but he never killed anyone himself.

I don’t think it was a state ban but, instead, a Supreme Court case which briefly outlawed the death penalty.

One case outlawed it around 1972 and a subsequent case around 1975 reinstated it but all death sentences before 1975 got commuted to life.
