DAT: 2017 World Champions Houston Astros offseason discussion: ASTROS ACQUIRE GERRIT COLE

Time to move on and start looking to back-to-back World Championships.
A.J. Hinch will return for the 2018 season. Sorry Lou and Ryno.
Beltran will not be resigned as a player. I think he pretty much spelled it out that he’s retiring. Let’s hope Houston finds him a spot on the bench because he seems to have a special effect on these young guys.
Shore up the back end of the bullpen. Need lefty arms.
I wouldn’t be opposed to another starter as well.
I don’t think we are signing any position players because I think Fisher is staying on the big club and Marisnick. I wouldn’t be opposed to having Maybin back for he seems to fit.
Time to start working for the 2018 season.

Yessir on to the next season! Wonder what bullpen arms we will add to our disposal?

I thought we were holding off on this thread until the weekend. Oh well, no biggie.

MLB Trade Rumors just published their predictions for the top 50 FA's
quote:
8. Wade Davis – Astros. Four years, $60MM. Davis, 32, came up as a starter in the Rays system and was traded with James Shields to the Royals in a December 2012 blockbuster. 2013 was a tumultuous year for Davis – his wife had a baby, he lost his stepbrother unexpectedly, and he pitched his way out of the rotation by August. He began 2014 as the Royals’ setup man and never looked back, garnering Cy Young votes in a dominant season. He moved into the team’s closer role when Greg Holland got hurt the following year and will forever be remembered flinging his glove into the air after punching out Wilmer Flores looking to end the 2015 World Series. Davis missed time late in 2016 with a flexor strain in his pitching elbow, but the Cubs were not deterred in deftly trading Jorge Soler for him last offseason. Davis had a fine year as the Cubs’ closer, though he walked more than five batters per nine innings in the second half and that trend continued as manager Joe Maddon pushed him into multi-inning postseason stints. Despite a few warts, Davis is the best closer available and will likely be targeting Mark Melancon’s four-year, $62MM deal from last winter. The Cubs shied away from big-money closers last winter, but it’s still possible they could pony up for Davis. If the Cubs look elsewhere, the Astros, Cardinals, Rangers, Nationals, Twins, Braves, and Rockies could be fits. Davis is another slam-dunk recipient of the qualifying offer and will reject in search of a long-term deal.

What are they gonna do with all of the starting pitchers?
Verlander
Keuchel
McCullers
Morton
Peacock
McHugh
Fiers
Musgrove
Martes
That’s 9 guys. Musgrove and Martes will probably stay in the bullpen.
But what about McHugh and Fiers?

To be fair, it's fine to talk about the offseason, but since this is the first World Series title ever, I will definitely enjoy this for the rest of my life. I don't care.

Tony Watson

I doubt he signs on as a backup OF / pinch runner role. He'll go somewhere where he can play. I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him back either but don't see how he really fits with Marisnick healthy.

I am hoping Beltran announces his retirement here in a few hours and we can find a spot for him as a minor league instructor or something
If we are going to add a position player I think it would be another versatile guy who could play some LF and DH and still be a bench asset if a Tucker or Fisher steps up and takes the job full time.
There are a lot of solid bullpen arms on the FA market but not many LH guys. McGee or Watson are the only LH FA I would really want. Tons of RH bullpen arms though and I think we will sign one of those and maybe trade for a LH

Same thing as this year with more flexibility. Lance hasn't proven he can stay healthy, Morton has had injuries throughout his career and McHugh missed half the season this year.
Fiers won't make the team, Musgrove definitely better suited for the pen and Martes might go back down to develop more.

Verlander Keuchel McCullers and Morton are rotation locks. I could see McHugh getting the 5 spot and Peacock starting out in a swing man role where he gets some high leverage bullpen innings
Musgrove will be in the pen. Martes will be in the minors and I think Fiers gets dealt. Having rotation depth was a huge part of why they just won a WS though. And there wil obviously be injuries next year

I mean the Astros have to have the best starting 5 in the majors with Verlander Keuchel Peacock Morton and Lance. I just want some arms in the bullpen
Bring up a couple of the prospects and see where we are

Let’s get it started then

I don't think they go that big and commit that much money to Davis

I think Peacock assumes that "super reliever" role that comes in whenever it's necessary to shut down a big inning or the heart of the other team's lineup. He's also probably first in line when one of the top 5 hits the DL.
Fiers is your long reliever if he's on the roster, then probably your next guy in the rotation in there's another injury.
Musgrove I think has a place in the late innings.
Martes in AAA or bullpen.

Damn Fiers must not have gotten to the big leagues til he was like 29, he's not a FA until he's 35
Posted on 11/3/17 at 9:43 am to LSUBoo
My predictions (though I'm sure it will be wrong):
Verlander
Keuchel
McCullers
Morton
McCugh
Peacock and the super long relief role and is the next starter up if someone gets hurt
Musgrove stays in the bullpen
Martes to AAA
I assume they would try to trade Fiers, which they should be able to do. If not, I guess release him. Don't know how he fits on this team anymore.
I wouldn't be against us signing Will Davis too, but giving big money to one reliever for some reason doesn't sit right with me, even for Wade Davis.

My bad. I’ll post parade and celebration pics and we can stare at them all winter

Another position player possibility would be dealing Fiers (and perhaps a prospect) for a good defensive catcher that could spell McCann more. It would give McCann more days off to rest for October and stay healthy and free Gattis up to DH. Whoever the catcher is likely wouldn't be able to hit worth a shite but luckily we have a lineup that can afford that
Posted on 11/3/17 at 9:47 am to lsusportsman2
Fiers has no place on the team. It's a question of trade now or let him long man and trade him at the deadline to a middling team with injuries.
Martes should develop more in Triple A but I predict he will be next years pen surprise. He has so much potential and power in his pitches.
Whitley and Armenteros are still on the door step or a foot off of it in the minors as well.

Would the Astros wanna pay that much for Wade Davis?
