So yeah, we save like $400/ night by staying off the resort and have one day that's kinda a pita in Magic Kingdom.
I'm going to be down there from Dec 9-15, and we are only paying $109 a night at all star movies.

Good lord. How much do you think it costs to stay on site???
LOL, don't BS like you don't know. Show the actual bill. Yeah you can do really crappy all-stars that take forever on the bus for $120/ night plus all the other disney expenses thrown in, plus breakfast, and what not. Its not my first rodeo either.
We have 2 kids under 4 and usually go with a grandparent, so that requires at 3 rooms or a suite for just us. I'm not sleeping in the same room as my kids in a 2 bed hotel room for 3-4 nights at Disney. I can get a suite off site for literally $125 all said and done, and there are multiple options at that so my kids can sleep in a different room.
Is all-star really better then staying off site? The only place that all-star may be better is for Magic kingdom. I'd rather drive to the other 3 parks then take disney transportation from all-star.

Read my post above. All-star are fine, but better than off site? Not to me, I understand why people like it but I prefer to stay off site then all-star. If you are just a couple, that would be fine.
I have two kids under 4, I'd rather drive then do transportation. The pain that driving to MK can be, is made up for by how easy the other 3 parks are to drive up to.
Its $109 before taxes, and that doesn't include the fact that when you stay at All-Star you are locked into Disney for all 3 meals. So that adds another at least $50 if not over $100 for a family of 4 a night. Staying off site if we didn't eat dinner we'll grab a pizza, fast food, or something to go for dinner. We usually get a free breakfast at the off site hotel, something Disney doesn't offer.
Posted on 11/6/17 at 10:21 am to baldona
Free breakfast is offset by what you pay to park. Disney also delivers pizza to your room so that would be the same also.

LOL, a family of 4 can't eat for $20 at Disney.
Look, for a couple to stay at the bottom tier All-star that's fine. We are splitting hairs on cost savings here. We can agree to disagree on that.
Staying at one of the other properties on the monorail or within walking distance to Epcot is a hell of a lot more than staying off site. Sometimes that is worth it, other times it is not.
Disney is expensive but can be a lot of fun, its laughable for anyone to argue that its not expensive to stay on site. Even at an all-star they nickel and dime the crap out of you because they have you locked in with basically no other options.

However, you can stay at Coronado Springs or Port Orleans for a "fair" price of around $200/night depending on the time of year.
quote:Uh, that's even more reason to stay in a smaller place. If you were there a week or two, I definitely understand the desire to be in a bigger place, especially one that has a washer/dryer. For 3 nights, it's just a place to sleep a few times. Nothing more.

quote:You know that there are non-disney places to eat for cheap right? And that the rooms have mini-fridges? Hell, part of the plus of a DVC resort is that you can have a kitchen and make your own meals. Flying in? Not a problem, we can have groceries delivered from the resort's c-store. Other resorts have that option as well. That being said, food in Disney is about as wide ranging as major city: from crap to 5-star. If you're staying off site, partially to avoid eating disney's food early (which apparently you aren't since you say you go to the resorts to eat) or late (which means you're leaving the parks at 6? ), then congrats on going out of your way for no reason.

quote:The cost of a 4-night Disney vacation for a family of 4 can range from $1250 to $10,000. "Expensive" is relative. Some people want to stay on site for the ease of transportation and being closer to the experience. They don't have a big budget, so they forgo eating in the parks (you can bring in snacks and drinks), they pick up groceries for sandwhiches and cereal to eat at the beginning and end of each day. It can be done. You are extremely ignorant on this matter.

My kids go to bed by 8:30. Maybe later at Disney, but I'm not going to have a 1 room for 3-4 nights that I have to be uber quiet or wake my kids up. Mornings included, nice to be able to shower, have coffee, and get ready to go before the kids are up.
Yes I realize they are located by Animal Kingdom and Hollywood studios, I'm talking better because of parking. Everywhere but MK you can park and walk right into the park very easily, short walk. MK is obviously a pain to park and ride double transportation.
I get it Ell, you love Disney and do the DVC multiple times a year. I have no issues with that, but Disney is expensive and staying off site is not near the hassle people like to say it is and it will save you $100s a day. I go to Disney on average 1.5 times a year as I live in Florida, I've been there and done that.

LOl. Stop acting like Disney isn't expensive. I wasn't complaing, all theme parks are expensive. Its not like Universal or 6 flags is less.
4 nights, so 3 days at Disney? Its basically $100/ day for park entrance. Cheaper for Florida residends. That's $1200/ for a family of 4.
$125/ night for a hotel that's $500. Food all day at Disney for a family of 4 even on a decent budget is $100. If you pinched pennies and ate a handful of snacks and one meal that's still $50/ day. You can easily spend $250/ day on food for a family of 4. Easily.
Staying off site as a Florida resident for $55/ day for a ticket, usually costs me $1500-2000 for a 3 day weekend so 4 nights. I'm cheap, that's cutting a lot of corners. I can easily spend $500 more.
ETA: You are arguing with the wrong person. Like I said, I go about 1.5 times a year. I enjoy a limited amount of disney, my wife and daughters absolutely love it. They would go more if not for me. I'm not a Disney hater, it is what it is. But its not fair to act like its a cheap vacation.

quote:You can't pretend that you don't lose convenience by staying offsite. This is what I'm talking about. I don't care they you like to stay in some hotel/condo/house not on disney property. It works for you and that's great. You don't have to convince me. But pretending that things are just as easy as if you're on site is disingenuous. It's like you are trying to convince yourself.

quote:False. I've been often yes, but we go on different vacations as well. And I've also done disney cheaply, staying at (then) Dixie Landing where we brought our own food and drove. There was 6 of us for 5 nights. No one had a bad time or didn't enjoy themselves.
do the DVC multiple times a year
quote:And staying on site isn't nearly as expensive as you are making it out to be. I'm not calling offsite a "hassle." I'm saying there are things that make is less convenient. Add on top of that how poorly you plan things, or at least explain how you plan things, and you come across as someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.

LOl. Stop acting like Disney isn't expensive.
quote:Fake news. If you are going to do the trip cheaply, you don't have to spend every day in the parks. Kids tickets are cheaper and under 3 get in free (ETA: You said you have 2 kids under 4. So a 3 year old and a younger one? You could probably get them both in for free... since you're so worried about spending). $1250 is the bottom, cheapest way possible where you stay at the campground, eat grocery food, spend a day or two in the parks and the 3rd day doing the cheaper extras like disney springs, horse riding, etc.

Because the All-Star resorts are concentration camps - baldona, probably

We bring our own breakfast stuff and eat breakfast for less than $20 for the whole week. The only way I would ever pay Disney for breakfast is for a character breakfast. You're making this breakfast thing into far more than it is. Congrats on wasting your money paying to park?

A "bottom-tier" Disney resort is nicer than wherever you're going to be staying. Unless you're renting out a house in the area, you aren't doing better than a Disney resort.

There are a lot of chain hotels that are nicer than all star for around the same price in Orlando. I'm not a fan of the value hotels when going to Disney.
Ease of Disney transportation makes up the gap though.

I really want to know what house/condo baldona is staying at where he also gets free breakfast for $125/night after taxes. Think it's somewhere in Gainsville?

I get where you're coming from, but don't we have to take the transportation into account when we're calling something "nicer?" It's just so awesome to not have to worry about driving anywhere the entire time I'm on vacation. The value of that is rather high for me.
This will be our first time in one of the value resorts, so maybe I'll have a different opinion when we get back, but I just don't see how you can beat that Disney bus system.

Yes, but we also have to take into account other things at the value hotels. You don't get to forget that. There are chain hotels over by Downtown Disney that I can get gov rate on that I would much rather stay at that gives me Disney transport and magic hours. I dislike Disney's value resorts.
I tend to stay more with family more often though. We usually try to stay at the nicer resorts when we want to treat ourselves to more Disney time.

quote:I'm with you here. Those resorts are technically still on Disney property, too. And while they don't use Disney transportation, they have their own shuttles that run almost as frequently. Another thing about the buses at the All-Star resorts is the single stop for a relatively large resort. So buses can be very crowded and can even lead to waiting for a second bus on busy days/times.
