I am looking at getting a new camera. It will mostly be for taking vacation pictures and videos, doing some research on taking pictures of the Northern Lights I have read I need a DSLR camera. I know nothing about cameras so please speak to me like a child when making recommendations.
I am looking at the Canon EOS Rebel T6 right now.

Depends on what you want to do with your photos I think. But I don't know shite about cameras

The lenses are and your camera knowledge is more important than the camera body. Top quality lenses can be rented for a trip if you don't want to spend the $$$ on a certain lens or if the lens has no real use for you besides the trip.

I have a cannon rebel set up similar to that and use it all the time with my business for still pictures and vacationing. Though I have gotten lazy lately and just use my phone, the cannon is pretty easy to use and figure out. There are tons of teaching aids out there
Thats a pretty good deal for what you are getting and how you are going to use it

Check out the Sony A6000 and the Sony 28mm F2 lens for autofocus or the Rokinon 12mm F2 lens for manual focus. I've used them for astro shots, but I've never been in a location for the northern lights. I can't see why it wouldn't work. The below was using the 28mm lens. The pic could be better with darker sky and more effort in post processing. You will need a tripod.
