ICQ and AIM were kings of the early internet. When the internet meant sitting through repeated modem tones praying you could get connected and jpegs downloading at slow speed.

Met my wife on AIM in January 2000. Crazy that it has still been around. I'll pour one out later for AIM.

I remember receiving AOL CDs, which seemed to be weekly.

They're not really comparable though. I've used both since I was on the internet.
IRC is good for communities and chat rooms. AIM had chat rooms, but was better for communicating person-to-person.
