Imagine a world where every person had to read at least an hour a day

Thoughts? Im not saying Dostoyevesky or Tolstoy every night but even Dr. Seuss or See Jane Run. An hour of quiet contemplation focusing on words on a page stimulating the brain. By reading I mean books and excluding social media and other nonsense.

I read one to to hours a day before going to sleep. I've done it most of my life and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. At any given time I have 6-10 books that I'm at some stage of reading. I also have a few magazine subscriptions (mostly food or wine related) that I read monthly.

Schools are really pushing just that. My daughter is in 5th grade and starting in 1st grade has had to read for 20-30 minutes per day. Son is in 8th, and he has to read for 30-45 minutes per day. A lot of nights, it is their only homework.
I think it is wonderful. Both now love to read, and read much more than the required amount.

I go into the office Mon through Thurs most weeks. For lunch I either grab Jimmy John's from up the street or bring leftovers. I spend my lunch hour at my desk eating and reading a book. It's a great break from everything in the middle of the day.
Sunday through Thursday I usually read between 30 minutes and two hours (average about an hour) before going to sleep. Then length is typically defined by how long the melatonin takes to kick in.
Friday and Saturday nights I'm usually too drunk to read anything but Tigerdroppings.

Can I just ask why you have that many going? I have usually 2 going (one fun book and one self improvement type book) but never like 4-5. I just can't keep focused on that many when I work in a place where I'm reading all the time anyway

I have six books stacked in my "to read" pile next to my bed. Usually try to finish one before starting another.

I'm with you. Two is all I can handle at a time, and one has to be a lighter read. I tried reading a Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy book at the same time once. It was a disaster.
There are currently 9 books on my nightstand to read or being read now.

I always have two going. One at home, and one at work.

My children go to a school that is also really big on this. As a third grader they are required to read 1 book every 3 days. It's third grade reading but they really push this and it is his only homework most days. When I go to pick him up from after care, you see all these kids sitting around reading so they don't have to do it when they get home. I think it's great.

Yep. My daughter says most of the kids read on the bus every afternoon.

Different books for different interests. I generally have a cookbook or two plus a photography book and a little mix of fiction and non-fiction. It all depends on my mood. When a book gets its teeth into me I'll finish it. I'm a fast reader and probably have a short attention span as well which leads to me bouncing around.

Would the world be a better place?

I read about 20 hours a week at a minimum. It is the best brain food possible.

Same here. Two books going at a time but as soon as I finish one I start the next. I think it's an attention thing, if I get bored with one book I don't like to quit on it and I'll just go with the other.

Growing up my parents made me read an hour every evening. Didn't matter if it was a magazine, comic, book, whatever. My wife bought me a kindle 5 yrs ago and I've picked up the habit of reading for an hour every night. Its not hard to turn off the TV and read when all they have on are reality shows.

My ipad changed me. I hadn't been an avid reader except for vacations for probably 15 years. I would fall asleep most nights on the couch watching TV.
Got my ipad 5 years ago and pretty quickly switched to reading at night instead of TV. I like to stay up later than my wife, so the ipad makes it easy to read in the dark. I never sleep on the couch (on purpose) anymore and I can't remember the last time I even turned on the TV in the bedroom.
I typically stick to one book at a time along with an audiobook for my 2 hour roundtrip commute a few days a week.

When i was in jr high we had "blocked" English classes which meant instead of just one period it lasted 2 periods. First period we were required to bring a book and read. If we didn't have a book we were sent to the library to get one. We need more teachers like Mrs. Embry!
